Hackney Unite union strike action – show your support!

As you may be aware, Unite union members working in Waste Services (Millfields Depot), Building Maintenance (Florfield Depot) and Passenger Services (Andrews Road) are taking strike action between 25-27 April and 3-5 May over pay (read here for more details).

Disappointingly UNISON is not involved in these strikes as our ballot did not reach the required threshold for taking industrial action, meaning our members cannot take part in any industrial action during working hours. Nevertheless, Hackney UNISON supports Unite members in fighting for a better deal when the cost of living is getting ever more difficult.

Here’s what you can do to show solidarity with our colleagues on strike and protect yourself:

  • join the legal protests and rallies outside of your contracted hours of work eg, before or after your shift, during lunch and breaks. Hold a banner, sing a chant and share photos on Unite’s Twitter feed
  • members in those areas should continue with your normal duties and responsibilities – managers should not move staff from their duties or make them take on any additional responsibilities directly as a result of this industrial action
  • look out for managers bringing in agency workers to cover staff on strike – this could be illegal

If you have any queries regarding the situation in your area, or about covering for colleagues who are on strike, you should contact your local steward or the branch office on hackney.unison@hackney.gov.uk.

In solidarity,

Hackney UNISON
